Hazing Prevention at Maryland
The University of Maryland embraces traditions that strengthen our community bonds while upholding core values of respect, safety and inclusion in all activities.

At the University of Maryland, we are committed to fostering a culture of care—one where every member of our community feels valued, empowered and supported. That starts with how we welcome one another.
Hazing has no place on our campus. Whether it's in student organizations, athletic teams, or fraternities and sororities, we are committed to building a culture where belonging is never built on harm.
This site is your resource for understanding what hazing is, how to recognize it and what to do if you or someone you know is experiencing it. Together, we can create a campus where tradition never comes at the cost of someone’s well-being.
Every Terp has a role in preventing hazing and promoting respect.

Hazing Policies, Resources & Prevention
Hazing generally refers to any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a student organization or student group that humiliates, degrades, abuses or endangers them, regardless of a person's willingness to participate. Hazing can occur in various organizations or groups, including fraternities, sororities, athletic teams, clubs and other student organizations. Hazing is defined in the University's Policy and Procedures on Hazing (V-1.00(K)).
Hazing is prohibited by the University under the University’s Policy and Procedures on Hazing (V-1.00(K)). Because the University’s Code of Student Conduct (V-I.00(B)) has jurisdiction off-campus, it does not matter if the hazing occurred on campus or anywhere else. If a student organization or group is involved, the University will address the incident.
Reporting hazing helps protect your peers and upholds our collective values. By reporting, you contribute to a culture of respect and integrity, helping us ensure a safe academic environment and a welcoming and engaging social community where all students can thrive. Whether you're directly involved or a concerned observer, your report can initiate positive change.
Hazing Prevention and Awareness Programs
The University of Maryland provides comprehensive resources to prevent hazing and support those affected by it. Our prevention and awareness programs aim to educate, engage and empower all community members, including students, staff and faculty, to recognize, prevent and respond to hazing.
