Responsibilities to Challenge and Report Hazing
At the University of Maryland, every member of our campus community—students, faculty, staff and advisors—shares the responsibility to speak out against hazing and take action when they witness or suspect it. This responsibility goes beyond simply avoiding participation. It means actively challenging harmful behaviors and reporting concerns to the appropriate campus authorities.
Remaining silent or indifferent in the face of hazing is not a neutral act. Apathy and passive acceptance allow harmful practices to continue and can have serious consequences. Individuals who engage in hazing can be held accountable under the university’s Hazing Policy and the Code of Student Conduct.
Creating a safe and respectful community is a shared effort, and meaningful change begins when we all take responsibility.
Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, Campus Security Authorities are required to report incidents of hazing to the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), in accordance with reporting protocols.
